Time is running out to save our River Murray.

For decades, too much water has been taken out of the river upstream - leaving precious little by the time it flows down to South Australia.

We rely on the Murray for drinking water, for agriculture, for industry, for tourism, and for so much more.

The Murray-Darling Basin Plan was supposed to ensure South Australia got enough water to keep the Murray alive. But too much of the plan hasn’t been implemented, and the water we were promised hasn’t been delivered.

For our community, our economy and our environment, we must save the River Murray.

The Issue

The River Murray is South Australia’s lifeblood.

It supplies vital water for every part of our lives – drinking and cooking, primary production, irrigation, and so much more. And it supports vital ecosystems right along the River – so much unique wildlife and plant life, and so many tourism jobs that follow.

As the state at the end of the river, we’ve always had to fight for our fair share of water.

The Murray-Darling Basin Plan is our best shot at getting the water we need, and keeping the river flowing.

And an important part of that Plan was 450 gigalitres of water for South Australia, to keep the Coorong and Lower Lakes alive.

But time is running out, and the water we need isn’t flowing.

Allegations of water theft by big irrigators. Those upstream refusing to do the work to reduce their consumption. And politicians failing to deliver on their promises.

Over eight long years, the Morrison-Joyce government failed to deliver the water our state was promised. This hurts our community, our farmers, and our environment.

Since arriving in Canberra, fighting for our fair share of water – and holding people to their promises – has been one of my top priorities. Please, join me in the fight for our lifeblood. Let’s save the Murray.

SA needs the 450 gigalitres of water we were promised for the Murray, on time and in full.

Our community, our economy, and our environment rely on a healthy River Murray.

Delivering the objectives of the Murray-Darling Basin Plan is complex, but we can do it - through collaboration and cooperation between Basin jurisdictions and stakeholders.

“We are grateful to have a new Federal Minister who is committed to delivering the Murray Darling Basin Plan in full.”
